Penalties and yellow cards

November 22, 2012

Just watched the second half of Manchester City and Real Madrid. In minute 73 Manchester City got a penalty kick from a situation that I think shouldn’t be anything at all. Certainly not a yellow card. But the referee (Gianluca Rocchi from Italy) gave Man City the penalty and Álvaro Arbeloa the yellow card. Since Arbeloa already had a yellow he was sent off and Real Madrid could have lost the game because of that decision.

Is it a recent trend that penalties more often follow by a yellow card today? I have the feeling that referees today pick up the yellow card almost every time they blow for a penalty kick. I also think that referees from certain countries (e.g. Spain) do so more often than others. Is there a website out there or anyone with data confirming my thoughts? Or, am I wrong?
