Best eleven

July 1, 2012

Here is my, highly subjective, top eleven from the Euros. Only players from the teams that reached the quarter finals are considered. I guess this team would not stand a chance against Spain, but it would be just boring to pick eleven Spaniards. The team is based purely on the performance in the tournament and not earlier in the season.

Joe Hart

Fábio Coentrão – Mats Hummels – Pepe – Jordi Alba

Andrea Pirlo – João Moutinho – Sergio Busquets

Mesut Özil – Cristiano Ronaldo – Andrés Iniesta

Hart saved England in many games, especially against Italy. His performance in the penalty shootout in that particular game almost lost him his place in my team.

Since I couldn’t find a natural right back that I like enough I play Coentrão to the right and pick Alba to the left. Pepe had a tremendous tournament, let us hope he continue like this from now on (and stops his reckless behaviour from time to time).

Moutinho and Busquets have been the two best central midfielder in my opinion. Pirlo is chosen before Xavi Hernández since I want at least one Italian in the team.

Özil, Ronaldo, and Iniesta should change positions all the time, with two players starting more wide and one in a central forward role.

A lot of players are left out that I really wanted in the team, especially Xavi, Luca Modric, Cesc Fàbregas, and Sami Khedira (only midfielders).
