Any Swedes in team England?
Before the Euro game between Sweden and England, Swedish media speculated on how many Swedes that actually are good enough to play for England. If I remember things correctly they concluded that only Zlatan Ibrahimovic would break into team England. Swedes generally laugh about the English media and we think that the English team is highly overrated in UK. (I have even heard people in UK that actually think that Andy Carrol is a better player than Ibra. This is of course ridiculous. Carrol might become a world class striker, but he is not even close yet.) But, when we take a closer look at the English team we must admit that England is way better than Sweden – at paper
Thus, looking at the ability of each player, Sweden did well in the two last game in the Euros. A close loss against England and a win over France is just fantastic when things are put into perspective. Here is my Eng/Swe team (based on the players in the two Euro squads):
Phil Jones – Olof Mellberg – John Terry – Ashley Cole
Theo Walcott – Kim Källström – Steven Gerrard – Rasmus Elm
Wayne Rooney – Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Joe Hart is soon to be one of the best in the world, so the goalkeeper spot is easy. Remember that Sven-Göran Eriksson actually chose him before Andreas Isaksson already in Manchester City. The right fullback position is a weak spot and I would have chosen Jones since I can’t find a better option. Moreover, my idea is to play with a very offensive left fullback (Cole) and also a very offensive right winger (Walcott). Rasmus Elm to the left should walk in to a more central position most of the time, leaving space to Ashley Cole, and also make room for own shots and passes. Elm is perhaps chosen a bit too subjective. Young is left out for the same reasons…
A key player here will be Walcott, his pace will be very important with five creative teammates. Kim Källström is chosen before Scott Parker simply because he is a better footballer. The two men up front are just pure world class and I believe they would understand each other very well.
I really believe this eleven would cause problem to most teams in the world. But at the same time, the best (Germany and Spain in Europe) teams are clearly better.
In conclusion, Sweden has a worse team than England, but England is still far from the best teams (Germany and Spain).
